Ian McHarg (1920-2001) was a landscape gardener & a founder of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. When working by having a Royal Engineers during World War II he was admitted to the architecture school at Harvard where he completed degrees in landscape architecture & town planning. He published Design with Nature in 1969 and it continues to exist as one of a virtually all celebrated books in landscape architecture. In that book he placed forth occasionally of a conception that would form the field of Geographic Information Systems.
